Artist Statement:
Over the last three years I have used painting and printmaking to explore the depiction of isolated and untouches landscapes. I am preoccupied with not only depicting but also experiencing place through my work and, therefore, my own physical contact with the natural environment is critical to the development of each piece. After experiencing a specific place I work in the studio to construct a fictionalized space shaped by my encounter. I explore a site in different weather, light, and seasons. Through the physical process of layering color and my own conflation of elements from these different atmospheric conditions, my work reflects a sense of both the growth and disintegration of nature. My painting process, which involves applying ink to wet paper, causes the dye to spread, bleed, and separate into its composite colors as it is absorbed thereby adding an element of unpredictability. The execution of every painting thus promises a combination of chance and control. the specificity of mark attainable through screen-printing has further allowed me to examine minute details within the landscape.
